July
4th - 9th 2004:
Itou's and Hashimoto's Custom Tour Mr. Itou and Mr Hashimoto came back to Alaska and brought a crew from their BMW Boxer club in Osaka. I designed a custom itinerary which focused on paved roads. After 6 days of riding, we had checked out Denali National Park, Fairbanks, and Seward. To end a wonderful 6 days of touring, we spent 6 hours cruising for whales and watching glaciers calve near Kenai Fjords National Park.
Here we are at the start of the trip. In all, we had 6 KLRs and two Road King Classics for the 1,200 mile tour.
We are going over the tour route, spatial formation through town, and other safety procedures while out on the road.
Meanwhile, the local Harley Owners Group was staging their weekly ride. This place is constantly inundated by motorcyclists from all over the world, all summer long.
Takeo is putting on the gloves, and getting ready for our first day of the ride. Goal: the entrance to Denali National Park.
Our first rest stop outside of Anchorage is at Mirror Lake. After a few adjustments, we are back on the road.
Dan Patino (aka mechanized sherpa) ran the support vehicle. In a rare sighting, Dan is struggling with work.
We stopped off briefly at Willow Creek. When we walked up to the creek, we could see King Salmon, up to 40 pounds in weight, working their way upstream. It is refreshing to see such a healthy natural stock of native salmon, still running the rivers along the highway system. This is still the last frontier!
Here is Mr Hashimoto with a new Roadking Classic.
Here is Mr. Itou at Broad Pass, Alaska, just south of Cantwell. At 70 years of age, this sprightly character is constantly joking and making the other members laugh. He has been riding for over 50 years, and last year took 2nd place in the Trial Bike Nationals in Japan for the "old doogers" division.
At Broad Pass, you are surrounded by 360 degrees of mountains, including Mt McKinley!
We stopped for a photo at the Denali Park entrance.
Mr Itou, directing traffic and dishing out laughs.
What the??? ---We stopped off at the Knotty Farm, to see some strange sights just south of Fairbanks, on the Richardson Highway.
Watch out for the Knotty Moose!!
A panoramic view of the Tanana River and the Alaska Range in the background.
Harley and Kawi, riding free on the open road. This shot was taken on the Denali Highway near Paxson. You can see for miles in each direction. No remarkable sign of humanity exists in all directions, save for the snaking two-lane highway.
Dan on an evening ride on the Denali Highway.
We checked out the view of the Alaska Range, with Paxson Lake in the foreground.
Here is the crew in front of Paxson Lake.
We pulled off the road to check out Mt Drum, part of the Wrangell Mountains in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
We had great food and accommodations the entire trip. One of our favorites was the hospitality at Sheep Mountain Lodge. The group loved the places we stayed and the spectacular riding.
On our last day, we took a 6 hour glacier and wildlife cruise with Kenai Fjords Tours. An excellent tour, we saw whales, birds of many species, killer whales, and calving glaciers. I highly recommend this cruise to all that visit Alaska.
The trip was a great success, and the group swears to come back and try a more adventurous, dirt-oriented tour. There is so much to see up here, that just one trip is not enough!
