Alaska Rider Tours'

2004 Denali Highway Adventure

This years Denali Highway Adventure was held in the first part of August. The fireweed colors were out and the fall was a whisper in the high elevations. We spent 6 days riding paved and dirt highways throughout southcentral Alaska. We topped off the week by taking the Alaska Marine Highway across Prince William Sound. This is the same tour route that Larry Grodsky from Rider Magazine took with us in 2002, except without the camping!

Left to right: Dave and Liz from Tennessee, Todd and Linda from California and John (the one with superman pose) our jack-of-all-trades mechanic. Dave and Liz road the BMW 1150 GS Adventure (far left), and Todd and Linda took the BMW 1150GS (right).

Here is Dave and Liz, gearing up to ride the last part of Thompson Pass outside of Valdez. The weather was terrific this day, and we could see the peaks of all the mountains in all directions.

Here is Dave and Liz in front of Bridal Veil Falls in Keystone Canyon near Valdez. The ride through Thompson Pass and Keystone Canyon is world class. One should ride it several times, just to take in all the waterfalls and spectacular vistas.

The group takes a rest after hiking around Worthington Glacier.

John played mechanic of the week.

Liz overlooks a stream crowded with Pink Salmon near Valdez.

On our rest day, while Todd and Linda went 4-wheeling, John and I took Dave on a largely unknown and scenic Dualsport ride. Having been a competitive rider, Dave loved the ride, the scenery, and the fact that I dropped my bike in the creek and he didn't!

The last day, we spent 6 hours crossing Prince William Sound by ferry. Along the way, we saw a bunch of wild critters, tide-water glaciers, and incredible scenery. When you see this area, you realize that the ice-age was just here.

The Denali Highway Adventure offers riders a chance to explore the backroads of Alaska. Along the way, there is an opportunity to hike, fish, raft or just relax. I do not plan to run this tour next year, but am developing a similar tour for 2005, incorporating fishing. It will be called "Reels and Wheels" and offers plenty of dirt riding and flyfishing for the week.
