Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse

The Haul road/James Dalton Highway/Highway 11 are the same thing, the Northern most road in North America, ending at the oilfields of Prudhoe Bay and the Arctic Ocean. Deadhorse is the name of the community that houses the oil workers from Prudhoe Bay/The North Slope.

If you would like to see the Arctic Ocean you must pay for a Prudhoe Bay oilfield tour. You must also fax a copy of your passport or drivers license 24 hours before the tour for a background/security check and you must reserve a seat for the tour.

ART Rules for Travel to Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay (the same general rules apply to Inuvik)

You must inform ART in advance if you would like to go to Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay/Inuvik.

You must have off-road/ dirt experience.

Be aware of:
Moving equipment.
Heavy truck traffic.
Water trucks, which effect road conditions.
Changing road conditions.
Changing weather/ adverse weather.
Animals on the road.

Do not Rush! Do Not Hurry! This is an Extreme ride. Your attention to the road and surroundings must be sharp!

Maintain a safe speed. Take your time! Riders who get hurt on the Dalton Highway are those who push themselves too far. Enjoy your ride, and be safe about it, its a long, expensive helicopter ride back to civilization.

Riders must spend NO MORE than 12 hours a day in the seat, period! From Fairbanks to Prudhoe, you must overnight once. From Prudhoe to Fairbanks, you must overnight at least once and you must overnight in Prudhoe Bay (Deadhorse).

Make lodging reservations ahead of time (If needed, ART will make suggestions or assist).

You must know how to change a tire/perform basic bike maintainance. Daily Routine: make a radiator flush with water, make an oil level check, brake fluid check, tire pressure and chain tension. Failure to maintain your motorcycle could result in a crash or worse. We will provide extra tubes/patch kit, tools, and a gas can.

Watch your equipment and how you load it on your bike, you don't want to lose your gear or melt it on the pipes.

Any problems while on the road must be phoned in to ART, as soon as possible.

If you would like to take a BMW GS you must own one/have extensive off-road experience on that style bike.

We recommend renting a satellite phone in case of an emergency.

Be courteous to truck drivers-they all talk by radio, make one driver mad and every truck on the Haul road will be after you!

Avoid the pipeline access roads, marked or unmarked, unless you want a visit from Homeland Security.

"Shoot first, ask questions later" is a real thing: respect mining claims and private property.

Do not take any side roads on the Dalton highway except for the road to Wiseman.

Bring rain gear and warm clothes, it can snow any month of the year and you will also go over the highest mountain pass in Alaska/the farthest North mountain pass in the world.

If ART should need to recover your bike for any reason there will be a charge of $500 anywhere North of he Arctic Circle (or anywhere in Canada). There is a $300 charge North of Fairbanks.
