Wrangell St. Elias National Park

Wrangell St. Elias National Park is the largest National Park in the United States. It is home to 9 of the 16 tallest peaks in North America. Mt. Drum, at 12,010 feet, is one of them. We go to the center of the park on our Ferry Tour, and explore around the glaciers near Kennicott.

Kennicott Copper Mine

The copper mine ruins of Kennicott are impressive. This building is now under restoration, and is the largest wooden building in the United States. Much of the original buildings of the mine are still standing, giving one the nostalgic feeling of a ghost town.

picnic lunch

We are having a picnic lunch during our fall tour of the Kenai Peninsula. Salmon are in the stream next to us, leaves are falling, and the sun warmed us as we took the tranqulity in.

salmon run

In Valdez, every river and stream is teaming with salmon from mid July on.

backroad

This is a backroad which does not exist on the road maps. It enters a steep canyon overlooking one of the largest wild rivers in Alaska.

crossing the Yukon River

Here, we are crossing the Yukon River and the 800 mile + Alyeska Pipeline can be seen in the background. What a wild river!

Thompson Pass

Just outside of Valdez. Thompson Pass, on a good day, lifts the spirit, as we ride past glaciers and ragged mountain peaks for as far as the eye can see. We stopped to view Worthington Glacier and later walked to the foot of it.

Valdez

Outside Valdez, Alaska. The scale of the mountains here is enormous.
