Spain!

Andalucia by Motorcycle

Read about:

Andalucia: Southern Spain

We spent a total of 8 days riding and sight seeing, and concentrated on the cities of Seville, Ronda, Malaga and Granada. For this custom trip, I wanted to create an itinerary which offered time for riding, relaxing or whatever. Indeed, this was perfect for all the couples on the trip! This area features spectacular winding roads, great food, exotic scenery and profound history. We would not have had such a great trip, if it were not for all the help from Iberian Moto Tours.

Scott Moreno and the crew supplied great bikes, advice and tour planning for this trip. Iberian Motor Tours offers organized tours and independent rentals in various parts of Spain, Portugal and Morocco. I highly recommend their service to those who want to see Spain.

A special thanks goes out to Juan Pablo of Iberian Moto Tours! He drove our support van and was more than helpful and professional during the trip! Without him, we were just a bunch of lost Americanos! That is him, front row, far left.

In Seville, Juan Pablo shows up with the van to wisk our luggage

to our destination: Ronda.

The group picks up the bikes in Seville at Todomoto, the BMW dealership. Thanks to Nacho, Scott and Juan Pablo, all went very smoothly and we were on the country roads within minutes.

Our hotel in Ronda is at the far left, perched over a steep cliff. The setting could not have been better. This hotel is part of a whole system of government run tourist hotels called Paradors. They are located all throughout Spain.

Rising moon over Ronda.

The Pueblos Blancos (White Villages) of Andalucia are often perched on hills overlooking the valleys. They can be very small, but always picturesque. Many of them have old castles, fortified on the tallest rock outcrop of the area. One wonders how many times it had been defended and against whom throughout the years. Almost always, the towns were surrounded by Olive and Almond trees.

We visited Gibraltar for the day. The Gibraltar monkeys are the only European monkeys. Rumor has it that they have been there even longer than the British!

Going to Gibraltar, you are entering another country, and you have to go through passport control. Once there, everything is in English, and the accents of the locals was a bit of mix of everything.

Indeed, when you looked out over the Mediterranean Ocean from Gibraltar, you could see the looming peaks of Africa....

On one of our day rides out of Ronda, we stopped at the ocean for lunch. This part of Spain is very mountainous, and we could see the distant Rock of Gibraltar and we descended a immaculate twisty road to the sea. This time of year (March) was very mild, with temperatures averaging in the 70's. (F)

Meanwhile, back at home....!!

The roads between Ronda and Malaga were superb. It was surprising how empty and scenic the country roads were.

Here is the view from the Parador of Malaga on the coast of the Mediterranean.

Here a view of Jeff overlooking the city of Grenada from our Hotel. Grenada features the Alhambra Palace, the last great hold out of the Moorish Kings.

You can see the Sierra Nevada Mountain in the background.

Here is a better look of the Sierra Nevada. It has a ski resort and views all the way to Africa.

As with the rest of the trip, the day ride out of Granada was spectacular. If you like curves, then consider riding Spain.

Back is Seville. Make sure to budget a couple of days in this city! In its day, most of the gold from the new world landed here. The architecture is rich and the main cathedral is a must see.

Walking along the banks of the Guadalquivir River, I imagined the hectic scene of Magellan's Fleet being equipped for its terrifying expedition around the globe.

Plaza de Espana

Couldn't pass up this tricked-out moped. Spain is a motorcycle country: traffic will allow you the right of way, filtering is encouraged, and you are allowed to park almost anywhere!

End Pic:

When lost, never pass up an opportunity to get

directions from the locals.
