2007 Japan 3 Island Tour

...and it was on the road again...

Along the sea of Japan,

around Kyushu,

over the rim of gigantic calderas,

...through steaming thermal vents. Mr. Hirata hand-picked some spectacular roads! Hundreds of curves and hundreds of tunnels went by through the days.

The scenery never stopped!

Because Japan is so densely populated, we had to take the toll roads from time to time to skip over the cities. Some of these can be quite expensive. For example, for crossing one bridge between Shikoku and Honshu Islands, it cost nearly $40 per motorcycle! Luckily, Hirata had it mapped out so that we were able to bypass the toll roads and cities for most of the tour.

One night, Kareoke was in the air...

What started with an innocent mini barbecue in front of me..

steadily progressed...

into a severely good time!

Then it was on to shopping for toilet seats...

Kevin 'O and Phil proudly show off their new electric toilet seats, featuring extra special services.

Barry makes a new friend.

We visited the amazing Iwashita Collection of motorcycles.

This Indian Side-Car was once owned by Steve McQueen.

Far right: The original Honda Motorcycle. The collection is any motorcycle rider's delight!

Shinto Shrines are found all over the countryside.

Then it was time to catch a ferry to our third and final island: Shikoku. This island is very mountainous and the scenery is magnificent. There is not much traffic on the backroads, and the riding is spectacular.

We stayed in an out-of-the-way fishing village, where the hotel staff literally met the fishing boats as they came in and took the catch straight to our tables!

Scenes like this one are all around Shikoku.

We stayed at a hotel where you could take a cable car to the top of the hill to soak in hotsprings.

It was not so bad.

Luckily, the roads were a thrill to ride in all directions!

Can you spot Lois?

Keleigh and Kevin negotiate a narrow street in a hotsprings town.

Phil explains the meaning of "herding cats" to the

BMW Boxer Club members.

More tunnels and cherry blossoms.

An ornamental bridge on Shikoku.

Once again, a big thanks to Akiko and Mr Hirata for making

the trip a great success!!

The Cherry Blossoms last about a week, so luck with the weather is a must. Riding in Japan this time of year, weather is a factor. If you prepare for rain, you won't be disappointed. If you prepare for an exotic experience, you will get all of that and more!

Riding is Japan is a an experience of a lifetime!
