Northern Patagonia: The Island of Chiloe, the Andes and Seven Lakes Districts of Southern Chile and Argentina In November of 2006, I conducted a 7- Day Custom Tour of Chile and Argentina with a rag-tag crew from all over the world. Half the riders were those festive fellows from the BMW Boxer Club of Japan, who help me with the Japan tours, and the other half were some adventuresome riders from the U. S.. Jeff Mariska came down to help as tailgunner, and Ricardo drove the chase vehicle. My mom even came down to see this truly spectacular part of the world.
Bike pick-up and orientation. Osorno, Chile. Motoaventura did a marvelous job. Many thanks to Sonia and Roberto!
Mr. Sakaue, with Mt. Osorno in the background. There is a dirt road to the ski lifts near the top.
Half way up Mt. Osorno and we stop to take in the mountains across the valley.
Pat, Roger, Fred, Bill and Jeff.
Crossing over to the Island of Chiloe, southern Chile. Big island, lots of lore about dwarves and withches come from there. We went to see if the penguins were home.
Pat and Roger on the ferry over to Chiloe. We spotted penguins from the boat.
Pulling up for lunch.
Pacific view, Ancud, Chiloe Island, Chile.
Too windy to see the penguins this day, so relaxing seemed a good idea. Nice cafe on the hill near by.
Parilla Restaurant, San Carlos of Bariloche, Argentina.
Great restaurants everywhere in Bariloche.
The Seven Lakes District of Argentina is simply amazing. The dirt roads are many and you can see old growth trees, glaciers, enormous fresh water lakes and high deserts in all one panorama. Dang!
Jeff and Phil with the Vannettes (Nina, Bobbie and Pat.)
The customs line near Junin de los Andes. Araucaria (Monkey Puzzle Trees) grow naturally here as we stare at an imposing volcanoe.
Can you ski it if it is steaming?
Back to Chile, again. The passes that connect Chile and Argentina are many. All of them are spectacular.
Spring snowballs in November on Mt. Villarica.
Mom and Me. Clear lake and river country. Trout habitat. Notice the steaming Villarica.
Last night, hotsprings and good cheer. The ride in was dirt, steep, twisty and worth it.
Bovine and Volcanoe.
Jeff rides by with Lake Llanquihue (Chile's largest lake) with Mt. Osorno in the background.
Jeff with Lake Nahuel Huapi and the city of San Carlos of Bariloche. The Andes.
It was a great trip, and I highly recommend that you explore this part of South America. It is beautiful, the people are friendly, the places we visited were very safe, and the food was excellent. The riding, I will have to admit, was above everyone's expectations. This is a perfect trip for couples. We had an 11 passenger van pulling a trailer which hauled our luggage, driven by Ricardo, a local. He was the best with the guests, and knew all the places to eat, and where to stop along the way. Check aerostichtours.com to see when we will be leading a group down there again. It is sure to be a ride you will never forget!
