Inuvik And Dawson
City:
Got a call from the crazy Canadian Rob this past winter. Said he wanted to go to Inuvik, but there wasn't a tour offered. I said I wanted to go too, so..... Robert Kolenc's 2006 Inuvik Ride on Adventure Rider
Participants:
Rob: the Cannukastanian instigator.
Super Dave
Phil: Trying to act like he knows where we are going.
Nicole: official Alaska Rider Tours scout and story teller.
Darwin: Trying to stay out of Danger in the North Country.
Kerry: The only creditable rider in the pack.

The Idea: Scout out
the ride from Anchorage to Inuvik, and see if it would The Verdict: Definately!!

The Rag-Tag group all leaves seperately from Anchorage, but soon catch up to each other at road construction on the way to Tok.
Nicole is loving the sweepers on the Taylor Highway.
The Taylor Highway, on the way to Eagle, is spectacular. It winds in front of you as far as the eye can see, and was a real highlight for us during the trip.
Though we only stopped briefly at Eagle, something about this little town on the Yukon River grabbed us all. We all wished we could have stayed longer.
At the border with Canada, Top of the World Highway.
The Top of the World Highway is largely paved and in great condition. No kidding, it skirts the tops of all the mountains on the way to Dawson...with spectacular views.
The first of three ferry crossings
in Canada. They are free and let
Downtown Dawson City. A music festival is going on and the town is lively.
We hit the Dempster and are taken away with superb weather and views.
Would you like these two to come into your Elementary school?
.....Then, we get word from
southbound traffic that the road gets worse. Three days of rain and no
traction. We press forward
The fun factor goes down, the danger factor sky rockets, so we decide to turn it around...
Things got better, though,
because we started to run out of gas.
Two Moose Lake, and half the party is there.
Weather turns good the next day, and we make a second attempt. Just a little sun does wonders for this road!!

The ferry crossing just before Fort McPherson.
Curious Locals.
Inuvik's famous igloo church. Inuvik was a dicotomy: by day, everyone was super friendly. By night, it turned into the Tiajuana of the North! We left our gas cans on our bikes, and they were stolen the second night out. There was blood on the stairs and entryway of our hotel. I recommend that if you have bikes, stay at a hotel just out of town, so as not to attract too much curiosity (there are a couple right as you enter Inuvik).
Rob...you be nice!
View from the hilltop overlooking Dawson.
Back in Dawson, and time to get a drink! (of course, it was the Canadian's idea...)
So what if someone's Toe was in it!
On the way back to the border, we couldn't help but explore some mining roads!
Our last sprint home: Back
on the Glenn Highway with
End Pic:
This ride is spectacular and is as adventurous as it gets in motorcycling! Nature is the big factor when riding the Dempster and can change your itinerary at any time. There is something about the mystique of the far north and the history of Dawson City that make this ride a must for adventurous riders! I invite you to join us to make this ride in the future. You will love it!
