Alaska Rider Tours Presents:

Prudhoe Bay or Bust!

June 20th - 24th 2005

Prudhoe Bay, here we come!

Cross the Arctic Circle!
Dive into the Arctic Ocean!
Soak in natural Hotsprings!
Ride the most remote parts of North America!

Phil Freeman, owner of Alaska Rider Tours, will be leading this trip.

This ride features 5 days of exploratory riding from Fairbanks to the Arctic Ocean on 2004 Kawasaki KLR 650's. This tour is designed for those who are short on time, but want to make a motorcycle trip of a lifetime to the farthest reaches of North America. Stream crossings, stunning scenery, wildlife viewing… this tour offers it all for those who want an unforgettable motorcycle adventure!

The Prudhoe Bay Tour features the Dalton Highway: the most remote stretch of dirt highway on the continent. We will be focusing on our goal: Prudhoe Bay, and searching out adventurous side-trips on old mining roads along the tour route. The riding is 40% paved, 60% dirt.

We will have a chance to celebrate summer solstice in Central, which features a barbecue with the locals and the new sport of "four-wheel bowling" - soon to become an Olympic sport! Also, the Caribou are migrating this time of year, so we will have a chance to see hundreds of them! Imagine having to stop your motorcycle while they pour over the road!

See wildlife, ride unmapped mining roads, and meet colorful "sourdough" locals. We will be staying in hotels, historic roadhouses, and industrial containers (that's all they have in Deadhorse!). Get your gear ready, we are headed North!

We will be trailering the motorcycles up to Fairbanks, and starting the tour there. Space is limited to 8 riders, on a first come/first serve basis.

* This tour is the first part of a two-stage round-trip motorcycle ride from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay and back. The second stage of the tour is called "Deadhorse Down". Riders are invited to join one stage of the tour or both.

Itinerary:

Sunday, June 19th:

Fairbanks

Please arrive in Fairbanks by mid-afternoon. Hotel check-in. Welcome Dinner at one of the finest restaurants in Alaska. Stay in Fairbanks.

Monday, June 20th:

Fairbanks to Circle Hotsprings - 128 miles (120 miles dirt)

We ride the Steese Highway to Circle Hotsprings. Along the way, we will be exploring some historic mining roads, which branch off this dirt highway. Stay in Circle Hotsprings. (bring a swimsuit, as there is a hotsprings resort for which the "town" is named.)

Tuesday, June 21st:

Free Day in Circle Hotsprings
(Up to 150 miles of dirt riding)

This day is up to you: Rest, read, relax, or explore around the area with your KLR. You can ride to the native town of Circle, located on the Yukon River (35 miles). You can also join Phil and explore some of the mining roads in the area. You may also check out a working gold mine! Be ready for the barbecue and festivities with the locals in the afternoon to celebrate the longest day of the year! Stay in Circle Hotsprings.

Wednesday, June 22nd:

Circle Hotsprings to Yukon River - 280 miles (169 miles dirt)

We will retrace our ride on the Steese Highway and head north to the Yukon River. This will be our longest day of riding and will take us to the banks of the famous Yukon! Stay near the Yukon River.

Thursday, June 23rd:

Yukon River to Coldfoot - 133 miles (45 miles dirt)

We cross the Arctic Circle on this day. Though not a long day of touring, there are some mining roads to explore in the Coldfoot area, which will keep us busy for hours! Stay in Coldfoot.

Friday, June 24th:

Coldfoot to Deadhorse - 239 miles (200 miles dirt)

We will be riding the most northerly road in North America. We will cross the remote Brooks Range at Atigun Pass. Scenery is world-class, and the chance of seeing wildlife (from Grizzlies, Dall Sheep, Caribou, to Moose) is high. Stay in Deadhorse.

*Deadhorse is the small industrial town which supports the oil exploration at Prudhoe Bay. It is located a few miles from Prudhoe Bay and the Arctic Ocean. To gain access to the ocean, one is required to take an authorized tour. (Security in the area is high due to terrorist threat to the oil infrastructure at Prudhoe Bay.) The cost of the tour is $37 per person. We may take the tour the morning of the 25th.

Saturday, June 25th:

Transfer Day in Deadhorse

Riders done with the trip may take the morning tour of Prudhoe Bay and the Arctic Ocean before flying back to Fairbanks. (Alaska Airlines runs daily flights)

*Riders staying on for the "Deadhorse Down" portion of the tour are welcome take the Prudhoe Bay/Arctic Ocean Tour and explore the area on their KLRs.
