Price!! Alaska Rider Tours Presents: Northern Expedition
Tour Prudhoe Bay, here we come! Cross the Arctic Circle! Phil
Freeman, owner of Alaska Rider Tours, will be leading this trip. The Northern Expedition is for those who want to ride the most remote stretches of dirt highway on the continent. We will be focusing on our goal: Prudhoe Bay, and searching out adventurous side-trips on old mining roads along the tour route. The riding is 60% paved, 40% dirt. If you are interested is seeing the real Alaska this IS the tour! Are you up for a world-class motorcycle adventure? See wild-life, ride unmapped mining roads, and meet colorful "sourdough" locals. We will be staying in hotels, historic roadhouses, and industrial containers (that's all they have in Deadhorse!). Get your gear ready, we are headed North! This tour is featured in Road Runner Motorcycle Tour and Travel Magazine 2005 February Issue. Space is limited to 8 riders, on a first come/first serve basis.
View Pictures from the 2004 Northern Expedition Itinerary: Sunday, July 17th: Monday, July 18th:
* Dinner this night will be prepared by Alaska Rider Tours staff. Tuesday, July 19th: *Breakfast prepared by Alaska Rider Tours staff. Dualsport exploring, all day long. Ride the mining roads in the Petersville area. Spend all day crossing streams and exploring the old gold mines in the area. Bring a fishing rod, and try your luck at catching Rainbow Trout, Arctic Graying and Salmon in the local streams. Stay in Trapper Creek. * Dinner this night will be prepared by Alaska Rider Tours staff.
Cross the Alaska Range past the tallest peak in North America: Mt. McKinley. Ride into famous Denali National Park. Stay in Nenana.
After a stop in Fairbanks, we follow the Dalton Highway north, to the vast interior of Alaska. Stay at the Yukon River.
Yukon River to Coldfoot - 133 miles (45 miles dirt) We cross the Arctic Circle on this day. Though not a long day of touring, there are some mining roads to explore in the Coldfoot area, which will keep us busy for hours! Stay in Coldfoot.
Coldfoot to Deadhorse - 239 miles (200 miles dirt) One of our longest days of touring, we will be riding the most northerly road in North America. We will cross the remote Brooks Range at Atigun Pass. Scenery is world-class, and the chance of seeing wildlife (from Grizzlies, Dall Sheep, Caribou, to Moose) is high. Stay in Deadhorse. *Deadhorse is the small industrial town which supports the oil exploration at Prudhoe Bay. It located a few miles from Prudhoe Bay and the Arctic Ocean. To gain access to the ocean, one is required to take an authorized tour. (Security in the area is high due to terrorist threat to the oil infrastructure in Prudhoe Bay.) The cost of the tour is $37 per person. We may take the tour the morning of the 24th. Sunday, July 24th:
We ride a hundred miles of rolling tundra and cross the Brooks Range again. Stay in Coldfoot. Monday, July 25th: Coldfoot to Yukon River - 133 miles (45 miles dirt)
We ride south to the Elliot Highway turnoff. We then ride west to the small frontier town on Manley Hotsprings. This town was started as a trading post for the surrounding miners at the turn of the century. It still retains its remote and rugged charm. We will be staying at the Manley Roadhouse, established in 1906. The town is quaint, and boasts a population of 72. For those interested, there are some hotsprings to soak in, after a days' riding.
Rest day in Manley Hotsprings. This day is up to you: Rest, read, relax, or explore around the area on your KLR 650. We have a chance to check out some of the mining roads in the area, exploring some fantastic areas. Other activities include Pike fishing or visiting a dog sled kennel. Stay at Manley Roadhouse. Thursday, July 28th:
We will ride back to Fairbanks and enjoy broad views of the Alaska Range from the Richardson Highway north of Delta Junction. Stay in Delta Junction. Friday, July 29th: Cross Alaska Range, and head west on the Denali Highway. Views of mountains and glaciers all day long. Stay at Gracious House mid-way on the Denali Highway. It is hard to describe the wild beauty of this place, so it is best to just ride it!
Superb views of the Alaska Range from the south and chance to see Mt. McKinley from the Denali and Parks Highways. Stay in Anchorage. Farewell Dinner out on the town at one of Alaska's best restaurants. Sunday, July 31st: Airport Service Provided if needed by Alaska Rider Tours.
