The Pitch:

-This ride features 12 days of exploratory riding from

Anchorage to the Arctic Circle on new 2004 Kawasaki

KLR 650’s.

-It is by far the most adventurous and farthest reaching

of all the tours offered by Alaska Rider Tours.

-The Northern Expedition is for those who want to go as

remote as possible in Alaska. The riding is 60% paved,

40% unpaved. Off-road experience necessary.

-This ride offers many side-trip possibilities. Some of the

exploring will be on mining roads which are not on the

maps! There will be some stream crossings. The

itinerary is not technical and will be conducted on well-

maintained dirt highways. No single-track riding.

Itinerary:

Sunday, July 18th:

Please arrive in Anchorage by mid-afternoon. Hotel/B&B check-in. Welcome Dinner at one of the finest restaurants in Alaska. Stay in Girdwood.

Monday, July 19th:

Girdwood to Seward (and back)

180 miles paved

This will be considered our warm-up day as we ride south to the Kenai Peninsula. The scenery is magnificent as the Seward Highway winds its way through the Chugach Range. We will stop in Seward for lunch, and head back. If there is time, we will check out the small, picturesque town of Hope. Stay in Girdwood. Dinner TBA.


Tuesday, July 20th:

Girdwood to Trapper Creek

205 miles 175 paved/40 dirt

Ride north through beautiful Hatcher Pass. High alpine vistas. Visit the small town of Talkeetna. Stay in Trapper Creek. Dinner TBA

Wednesday, July 21st:

Trapper Creek to Nenana

230 miles 190 paved/ 40 dirt

In the morning, explore the Petersville Road, with vistas of Mt. McKinley. Then head north through the Alaska Range at Broad Pass. Views of Mt.McKinley from the Parks Highway can be spectacular. On your own, you can ride 20 miles into Denali National Park. (this ride is highly recommended) Stay in Nenana. Dinner TBA.


Thursday, July 22nd:

Nenana to Manley Hotsprings

207 miles 131 paved/ 76 dirt


After a stop in Fairbanks, we follow the Elliott Highway north, to the vast interior of Alaska. The Elliott Highway is easy to ride. Traffic is seldom, and the views from the hilltops are excellent. We stay in Manley at the historic roadhouse. Population 72, Manley maintains the charm of the frontier. There are also natural hotprings available, should anyone want to relax and soak. Stay in Manley Hotsprings. Dinner TBA.

Friday, July 23rd:

Manley Hotsprings to Yukon River

137 miles 41 miles paved/96 miles dirt

We leave Manley and head north to the Yukon River. Stay near the Yukon River. Dinner TBA.

Saturday, July 24th:

Yukon River to Coldfoot…and back

228 miles 100 miles paved, 128 miles dirt

We cross the Arctic Circle this day and ride to the foothills of the Brooks Range. Brief gas-up in Coldfoot and visit of downtown Wiseman. Stay near the Yukon River. Dinner TBA.

Sunday, July 25th:

Yukon River to Chatanika

162 miles 122 miles paved/40 miles dirt

We cross the Yukon River and head south on the “haul road”. Riding through the interior of Alaska gives you a perspective on how remote and wild this country is. We will stay at Chatanika Lodge this evening. Boasting a museum-like atmosphere, this roadhouse was started during the gold rush, to service the local miners. There is a relic dredge nearby, giving testament to this area’s gold rush past. Stay at Chatanika. Dinner TBA.


Monday, July 26th:


Chatanika Lodge to Circle Hotsprings

117 miles 17 miles paved/100 miles dirt

Not a long day of travel. There is a chance for a side activity this day, depending on weather conditions. We will ride east over several low summits on the well-maintained dirt highway; Steese Highway. Excellent views, and plenty of side-trips on gold mining roads. Stay in Circle Hotsprings. Soak in the Hotsprings this evening. Dinner in Central.


Tuesday, July 27th:


Rest day in Circle Hotsprings.

This day is up to you: Rest, read, relax, or explore around the area. We can ride to the town of Circle, located on the Yukon River (35 miles). We can also check out some of the mining roads in the area, exploring some fantastic areas. Stay in Central. Dinner TBA.

 

Wednesday, July 28th:

Circle Hot Springs to Delta Junction

232 miles, 128 paved, 104 dirt.

Highlights include vistas from Eagle and Twelvemile Summits, lunch in Fairbanks, and broad views of the Alaska Range from the Richardson Highway north of Delta Junction. Stay in Delta Junction. Dinner TBA.


Thursday, July 29th:

Delta Junction to Gracious House

162 total miles. 100 miles paved, 62 miles dirt

Cross Alaska Range, and head west on the Denali Highway. Views of mountains and glaciers all day long. Stay at Gracious House, mid-way on the Denali Highway. It is hard to describe the wild beauty of this place. Dinner TBA.


Friday, July 30th:


Gracious House to Anchorage

262 miles 212 paved/50 miles dirt

Superb views of the Alaska Range from the south and chance to see Mt. McKinley from the Denali and Parks Highways. Stay in Anchorage. Farewell Dinner out on the town at one of Alaska’s best restaurants.

Saturday, July 30th:

Airport Service Provided if needed by Alaska Rider Tours.
